Most people own a fire extinguisher and have no idea what type it is or whether it's right for the fire they'd actually face. Worse, some people's instinct in a kitchen fire is to grab water — which can get you killed.
Here's a practical breakdown. Read it, then check the extinguisher you actually have.
Fire Classes
Fires are categorized by what's burning. Each class requires a different approach.

The Extinguisher Types
ABC Dry Chemical
The most common type for home and office use. Covers Class A, B, and C fires. The powder smothers the fire and interrupts the chemical reaction.
Best for: General home use — living room, garage, car. This is the one most people should have.
Not for: Kitchen grease fires (Class K). It'll knock down the flame temporarily but won't prevent re-ignition with cooking oils. Get a proper K extinguisher for the kitchen.
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
Displaces oxygen to suffocate the fire. Leaves no residue, which makes it ideal for electronics and server rooms.
Best for: Electrical fires, office equipment, areas where cleanup matters.
Not for: Outdoor use (wind disperses it too fast) or Class A fires (it won't soak into burning material).
Class K Wet Chemical
Specifically designed for commercial and home kitchen fires. The agent reacts with cooking oil to create a soapy foam that seals the surface and prevents re-ignition.
Best for: Kitchen — especially if you cook with a lot of oil or have a deep fryer.
Not for: Electrical fires.
Class D
Specialized for metal fires. Rare outside of industrial settings. If you're working with reactive metals, you already know this.
The Most Important Thing: Water on a Grease Fire
Never put water on a grease fire. Not a cup, not a glass, not a bucket. Never.
Here's why: Burning oil is far above the boiling point of water. When water hits it, it instantly vaporizes and expands — about 1,700 times its volume — in a fraction of a second. That steam explosion throws burning oil in all directions. You'll turn a contained pan fire into a fireball that covers your entire kitchen and you.
This is called a grease fire explosion, and it causes serious burns and house fires every year.
What to do instead with a pan fire:
1. Turn off the heat if you can safely reach the knob
2. Slide a lid over the pan to cut off oxygen — do not drop it, slide it
3. Leave it covered and don't move it
4. If it's out of control, use a Class K extinguisher or get out
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher — PASS
If you've never actually used one, it can be disorienting when you need it. The method is called PASS:
- • P — Pull the pin at the top. This breaks the tamper seal and unlocks the handle.
- • A — Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames. You're targeting the fuel source.
- • S — Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly.
- • S — Sweep side to side across the base of the fire until it's out. Keep aiming at the base even as the flames die down.
Stay low if there's smoke. Keep your back to an exit so you're never trapped. If the fire doesn't go out within the first few seconds of discharge, get out — don't keep trying.
What to Have at Home
At minimum:
- • One ABC extinguisher — garage, utility room, or general living area
- • One Class K extinguisher — kitchen
Check them once a year. The pressure gauge should be in the green. Most extinguishers last 5–12 years before needing professional inspection or replacement. If you've used it even partially, replace it — a partially discharged extinguisher won't perform reliably.
Mount them where they're visible and accessible, not under the sink behind a cabinet. If you have to dig for it, you've already lost time.
