I want to talk about my friend Charlie.
Charlie is one of those guys who has always been there — the kind of person who shows up when you need him, gives more than he takes, and never complains about the hand he's been dealt. He spent his life working hard, and now he's getting by on Social Security. It's not much, but he makes it work. What he can't make work is what's happening to his home.
The Situation
Charlie's been living in his late brother's house in South Carolina for a while now, after selling his place in Georgia and moving up here. The house was in better shape than where he was living in GA, but it's needed real work the whole time, and it's finally caught up with him. Right now there's no running water because a pipe burst in the yard, and that's just the most immediate problem. There are repairs that need to happen for him to feel settled and safe in it.
These are the kinds of things that stack up fast when you're on a fixed income and simply don't have the money to keep up with everything. It's reached a point where the conditions are affecting his ability to get moved in, his daily life, and his sense of stability.
Charlie doesn't ask for help. That's just who he is. But I watched this go on long enough, and I knew something had to be done.
